Shaker Schools Excel at State Championships
Twenty four students from
Shaker Heights High School and Middle School
attended the Ohio High School and Middle
School Chess Championships in Wooster on
March 21 & 22. The event attracted 220
participants. The high school team of Trey
Modlin, Jiawei He, Robin Steiner and Bharat
Gupta, made a valiant comeback and narrowly
missed ending Columbus Alternative High
School’s ten year reign as state champions,
finishing a half point behind and capturing
second place. Outstanding individual results
were achieved by Jiawei He who was awarded
third place honors, and Trey Modlin who
finished fifth, both winning five of their
six games. The middle school team of Zane
Eisen, Nick Haubrich, Donald Turner and
Rohit Kumar won second place, for the second
consecutive year. Zane Eisen was the top
individual finisher, winning seventh place.
Progress With Chess has
provided chess instruction throughout the
school year at Shaker Heights High School
and Shaker Middle School since 2005, with
funding and enthusiastic support from the
Shaker Heights Board of Education. When we
first started in 2005, the average
attendance at the high school club was three
students; we now regularly attract 15-20
students to each session and chaperone them
to state and local competitions.
